About Lone Star Explosion 2014

Lone Star Explosion 2014 is Houston’s second international performance art biennale. It is taking place on February 19th-22nd, 2014 in three of Houston’s venerated performance art venues, Box 13, The Art League and Notsuoh as well as online and in public space. Lone Star Explosion 2014 seeks to showcase performance art that pushes the artists and audience in new ways, especially performance art that questions fundamental assumptions about the way we experience time, space, relationships, the self, society, and sexuality. Visiting artists from around the world have been hand picked because their work offers insight and expansion on themes and practices currently explored by Houston Performance Artists. Houston’s rich and diverse performance art scene will also be featured in the Biennale. The unique, rebellious, beauty of Houston’s own performance art will join with the brilliant expression of our visiting artists, creating an exchange of epic proportion. We intend for every participant to leave the festival full of new inspiration and greater possibility. Lone Star Explosion also collects and archives the diverse practices of performance artists working in Houston. It brings an exciting group of emerging and internationally recognized artists to the city. The biennale is an important showcase of local and international live art, for the art community in Houston and for a global network of Contemporary Performance audiences and artists.Lone Star Explosion 2014 is curated and directed by Jonatan Lopez and Julia Wallace. Ryan Hawk is serving as the Education Opportunity Coordinator and the artist board consists of Kelly Alison, Emily Sloan, Ryan Hawk, David L Davis, Koomah, Y. E. Torres, Jonathan Jindra, Hilary Scullane, David McClain, Daniel Bertalot, Evan McCarley and Unna Bettie. This project is fiscally sponsored by HIVE Village. She has performed nationally and internationally with and without permission in a variety of contexts, from art galleries and festivals to bars and grocery stores. She grew up in Houston, Texas and received her BFA in painting from the University of Houston in 2009. She served as a facilitator to Performance Art Lab, one of Houston’s most mischievous art collectives, and was one of the founding members of their guerilla flash dance project sexyATTACK. She was the creator and curator of Houston’s Performance Art Night, an event that strengthened the growing performance art scene in Houston. She also curated “Performance Art Houston” in 2010 at El Rincon Social, a show that brought to light and shifted Houston’s emerging performance art scene. She is currently the founder and co-facilitator of Continuum, a social sculpture consisting of a group of performance artists joined in the aspiration to create a safe and encouraging space to grow through performance art. Her personal art is often a cathartic exploration of desire, the body, and personal experience. Her art described as being shockingly honest, paired with an intimate sincerity. She happily lives in a cozy apartment with her beautiful daughter and her partner, John (the wonderful and talented lead singer/guitarist of the local band Muhammadali).

Jonatan Lopez:
